NSCS was founded in 1994 at George Washington University in Washington, DC, by Steve Loflin, who, at the time, worked in Student Affairs at George Washington University. Loflin founded NSCS to recognize students who performed well academically during their first years in college and to provide members with an opportunity to take a leadership role in an organization devoted to scholarship, leadership, and service. All chapters engage in community service, and scholastic and social activities. Membership is offered by invitation to first- and second-year college students with GPAs of 3.4 and above.

NSCS at New Mexico State was founded in the year 2000. As of the summer of 2013, our chapter has been recognized with the highest achievement of all with the Platinum Star Status Award. This award was awarded to the top 10 chapters in the nation. The Platinum level of the Recognition Program is the highest possible award to be awarded to an individual chapter. This level of distinction was designed to formally recognize and acknowledge the hard work and dedication that exceptional NSCS chapters have put into developing their members' experience.

We welcome new members every year to join our honor society! Being a member has so many benefits. We meet every month for general body meetings to help everyone be informed and our chapter also hosts many community service events throughout the year where we gather together as a group and go out and help our community. We have a beautiful New Member Induction Ceremony in the fall, which is the highlight of becoming a member because it is such an honorable ceremony to remember.
